2903

Case IH 2903 – Transmission Controller (Trans / TCU): Torque sensor supply voltage below 4.8 volts tolerance (CCH Only)

Issue description

This code indicates a low voltage condition on the sensor's power circuit. The 5-volt reference or supply voltage feeding the transmission torque sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold of 4.8 volts.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum 235
  • Case IH Magnum 250
  • Case IH Magnum 260
  • Case IH Magnum 280
  • Case IH Magnum 290
  • Case IH Magnum 310
  • Case IH Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Verify all transmission and ECU fuses, as a blown fuse can cause low voltage supplies to transmission circuits

  2. Use a multimeter to measure the supply voltage at the torque sensor connector (must be at or above 4.8 volts)

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the Transmission Controller and the torque sensor for open circuits, chafing, or shorts to ground

  4. Disconnect the torque sensor to check for internal faults; if the 5V reference voltage returns to normal on the harness side when unplugged, the sensor has an internal short

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to protect the Transmission Controller.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the torque sensor (engine/transmission load sensor) on the heavy-duty transmission housing.

  3. Repair Wiring/Fuses

If the diagnostic checks revealed a blown fuse or a damaged wire in the harness, replace the fuse or splice/repair the damaged wiring.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the sensor is internally shorted (pulling the voltage below 4.8V), remove the faulty torque sensor and install a direct OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the sensor harness, reconnect the battery, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 2903 fault code. Run the tractor to verify the transmission ECU receives the proper torque measurement signal without logging the code.
