Case IH 2910-04 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Universal Control Module (UCM) / Auxiliary Controller: PTO rear clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault - voltage below normal

Issue description

The control module has detected that the voltage in the electrical circuit for the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch solenoid is below the normal operating range, or the circuit is shorted to a low source (ground). This prevents the solenoid from properly actuating the hydraulic valve that engages the rear PTO clutch.

Check the cause

  1. Verify system voltage: Check that the tractor's battery and alternator are outputting proper voltage (above 12V resting, 13.5V+ running). Low overall system voltage can trigger FMI 04 codes.

  2. Inspect wiring harness: Visually inspect the wiring from the TCU/UCM to the rear PTO valve block for chafed, pinched, or melted wires shorting to the chassis.

  3. Check electrical connector: Disconnect the harness at the PTO solenoid and check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  4. Test solenoid coil resistance: Use a multimeter to measure resistance across the PTO solenoid pins. If out of specification or showing continuity to the housing, the coil is internally shorted.

  5. Perform harness short-to-ground test: With the solenoid disconnected and key OFF, test the power supply wire for continuity to ground to identify any short circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the rear PTO clutch solenoid valve. It is typically mounted on the transmission/PTO hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor, near the PTO output shaft housing.

  3. Disconnect Electrical

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty PTO solenoid.

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the valve block area around the solenoid with brake cleaner or a rag to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Depending on the specific valve design, remove the retaining nut holding the coil to the valve stem, or remove the mounting bolts holding the entire cartridge valve in the block. Pull the solenoid straight out. (Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may leak).

  6. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid cartridge with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the new solenoid.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Turn the key ON and use the tractor's diagnostic display (or an EST tool) to clear the 2910-04 fault code. Start the tractor and engage the rear PTO to verify proper operation and check for hydraulic leaks.
