Case IH 2910-05 - DEC – DEC: PTO rear clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault current below normal

Issue description

The control module is attempting to send an electrical signal to engage the rear PTO clutch solenoid, but it is not detecting the expected return current. This underlying condition is almost always caused by a broken wire, an unplugged connector, or a burnt-out solenoid coil.

Applies to these machines

  • MXU100 to MXU135

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO clutch solenoid on the rear axle/transmission housing for rubbed-through insulation, broken wires, or rodent damage

  2. Inspect the electrical plug at the solenoid to ensure it is fully seated, clean, and free of moisture or corrosion

  3. Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the solenoid and measuring resistance across the pins with a multimeter (an 'OL' or infinite reading means the coil is burnt out)

  4. Perform a harness continuity test between the solenoid connector and the DEC module pins to locate any open wires if the solenoid tests within spec

  5. Check all transmission and drivetrain control fuses to verify the 12V supply voltage is intact (a blown fuse causes an open circuit reading)

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the PTO rear clutch solenoid valve block, typically mounted on the rear transmission housing or integrated into the differential lock/PTO valve assembly.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the faulty PTO solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid Coil

Remove the retaining nut or fastener holding the solenoid coil to the hydraulic valve stem.

  5. Replace the Component

Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM replacement solenoid onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut. (Caution: Do not overtighten the nut, as this can crack the new coil housing).

  6. Reconnect and Reassemble

Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display. Start the tractor and engage the rear PTO to verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
