Case IH 2910-06 - DEC – DEC: Transmission PTO Clutch Valve Actuator / Rear PTO Clutch Solenoid - Current above normal or grounded circuit
Issue description
The controller has detected that the electrical current flowing to the rear PTO clutch solenoid is higher than the normal operating range. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground or a short circuit between the cables in the solenoid coil or its wiring harness.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, and 400)
- Case IH Puma and Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate the rear PTO clutch solenoid on the rear transmission valve block. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the solenoid for chafing, melting, or pinch points against the tractor chassis that could cause a short to ground.
Connector Check: Disconnect the solenoid connector. Check for water ingress, dirt, or bent/corroded pins that could bridge the connection and cause a short.
Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the PTO solenoid coil. If the resistance is near zero (continuity), the internal coil is shorted and the solenoid must be replaced.
Harness Continuity Test: With the solenoid and the DEC module disconnected, test the harness wires for continuity to ground and continuity to each other. If a short is found in the harness, the wiring must be repaired.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the rear PTO clutch solenoid valve on the transmission housing/hydraulic valve stack.
Disconnect and Remove
Unplug the electrical connector. If the diagnostic tests proved the solenoid is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut/bolt and slide the solenoid coil off the valve stem (or unthread the entire cartridge valve, depending on the specific valve block design).
Clean the Area
Ensure the mounting area and electrical connector are free of hydraulic fluid and debris.
Install the New Part
Install the replacement PTO solenoid coil/valve. Torque to the manufacturer's specification.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the short was found in the harness during diagnostics, splice in a new connector pigtail or repair the chafed wire using heat-shrink tubing.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab AFS Pro display to clear the inactive 2910-06 fault code.
Operational Test
Start the tractor and engage the rear PTO to verify the clutch engages smoothly and the fault code does not return.
