Case IH 294 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECM): Hydraulic Fan Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor Voltage is too low

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the hydraulic oil temperature sensor that has fallen below the minimum acceptable threshold. This almost always points to a short circuit to ground in the sensor wiring harness, a failed sensor that has shorted internally, or a faulty controller input.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the hydraulic oil temperature sensor and inspect the sensor body, connector, and wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or corrosion causing a short to ground.

  2. Bypass / Disconnect Test: Disconnect the sensor and turn the key ON. If the code changes to ENG 293 (Voltage too high), the sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Harness Continuity Test: If the code remains ENG 294 when unplugged, test the signal wire for continuity to chassis ground to find a short in the harness.

  4. Sensor Resistance Test: Measure resistance across the sensor pins. At room temperature, it should read approximately 2500 ohms. Near 0 ohms indicates a defective sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower all hydraulic implements, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  3. Locate sensor

    Locate the Hydraulic Fan Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor on the hydraulic reservoir or pump inlet manifold.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  5. Prepare for oil spill

    Place a clean catch pan beneath the sensor port to catch any hydraulic oil that escapes.

  6. Remove sensor

    Use a wrench to carefully unthread and remove the faulty temperature sensor.

  7. Install new sensor

    Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the port. Tighten to the torque specification outlined in your specific model's service manual (do not over-tighten, as this can damage the brass threads).

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  9. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  10. Test for leaks

    Start the engine, allow the hydraulic oil to warm up, and inspect the sensor port for leaks.

  11. Clear fault code

    Use the machine's onboard diagnostic display or a dealer service tool to clear the ENG 294 fault code and verify it does not return.
