298967-00 - VCM

Case IH 298967-00 - VCM – VCM / PVED-CLS or PVED-CC Electrohydraulic Steering Controller: Steering valve communication fault

Issue description

The system is registering that data is valid, but it is above the normal operational range (Most severe level). The root cause is an excessive number of Priority 3 messages (safety-related messages) flooding the CAN bus, causing the steering valve actuator to lose communication with the rest of the network.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Reboot the system to see if the permanent error state clears and restores CAN control

  2. Check CAN bus wiring harness connecting the steering valve to the VCM for physical disturbances, short circuits to ground/power, or wire breakage

  3. Verify CAN termination by disconnecting the battery and measuring resistance across CAN High and CAN Low at the valve connector (should read approximately 60 ohms)

  4. Check for address conflicts on the CAN bus caused by aftermarket modules or failing ECUs

  5. Monitor for fault recurrence; if the fault code is repeated (increased by 1), the PVED-CC/CLS actuator requires replacement

Repair steps

  1. De-power the System

Disconnect the battery power supply to completely de-energize the PVED-CLS and valve sub-systems. This brings the system into a safe state before maintenance.

  2. Harness Repair

If diagnostic checks reveal chafed wiring or corroded pins at the steering valve connector, repair the affected harness section and apply dielectric grease to prevent moisture intrusion.

  3. Actuator Replacement

If the wiring is healthy but the fault persists or increments upon reboot, the PVED actuator head has suffered an internal hardware failure. Remove the 4 bolts securing the actuator to the steering valve body and install a new unit.

  4. Valve Replacement

If the internal spool of the steering control valve is physically binding (causing the actuator to overwork and fail), the entire steering control valve (orbital valve) must be replaced.

  5. Calibration

After replacing the actuator or the valve, power on the machine and perform a steering valve calibration via the Case IH AFS Pro display to ensure proper AutoSteer functionality.
