Case IH 298967-11 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Steering valve communication fault
Issue description
The control module has lost CAN bus communication with the electronic steering valve, or the data being broadcast by the valve is invalid or missing.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum 400 AFS Connect
- Magnum 240
- Magnum 260
- Magnum 280
- Magnum 340
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the UCM/VCM and the steering valve for broken wires, chafing, or corrosion at the connectors
Verify that the steering valve controller is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground (loss of power causes it to drop off the CAN bus)
Check if the UCM/VCM has logged related codes (e.g., 298967-00 for internal error, or 519573-XX for calibration failures)
Repair steps
Isolate the Fault
Disconnect the harness at the steering valve and use a multimeter to check for CAN High and CAN Low voltage (typically around 2.5V to 2.7V).
Repair Wiring
If CAN voltage is missing or shorted, trace the harness back to the UCM/VCM and repair the damaged section.
Inspect the Valve Spool/Plugs
Check for internal mechanical failures (such as a plug falling out of the steering valve spool) that can cause erratic behavior. If the valve is mechanically binding or internally damaged, it must be removed.
Replace the Valve
If the wiring is intact and the valve's internal controller has failed (causing the communication loss), replace the Autoguidance/Steering Valve assembly.
Recalibrate
After replacing the steering valve, perform a steering valve calibration via the AFS Pro display or dealer diagnostic tool to clear the code and restore autoguidance functionality.
