298967-19 - VCM

Case IH 298967-19 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Communication failure with the steering valve

Issue description

Indicates a communication failure with the steering valve (Loss and recovery of CAN bus connection failed but recovered). This can be triggered by the voltage supply dropping below the lower limit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • TJ
  • Magnum 71xx
  • Magnum 72xx
  • Magnum 89xx

Check the cause

  1. Verify Power Supply: Test the battery voltage and the specific power supply circuit to the steering valve actuator.

  2. Inspect CAN Bus Connection: Inspect the CAN adapter plug at the steering valve for loose pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Test CAN Communication: Use a diagnostic service tool to read the DM1/DM2 messages and verify if the CAN connection status is active or if the fault is historical.

  4. Check Factory Activation: Ensure the steering controller is properly calibrated and activated in the vehicle's display interface.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrohydraulic circuits.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or a corroded CAN adapter plug at the steering valve, clean the terminals with contact cleaner, replace damaged pins, or splice in a new connector pigtail.

  3. Restore Voltage

If the voltage supply was below the lower limit, trace the power wire back to the UCM/VCM and fuse panel. Replace any blown fuses or degraded relays supplying power to the steering circuit.

  4. Actuator Replacement

If the wiring and voltage are perfect but the PVED-CC actuator continues to drop CAN communication, the steering valve actuator module has an internal fault and must be replaced. Unbolt the actuator from the hydraulic steering valve block and install the new unit.

  5. Recalibration

After repairing the connection or replacing the valve, use the diagnostic tool to perform a steering valve calibration and clear the active 298967-19 fault code.
