Case IH 298968-11 - VCM – UCM: Steering valve controller internal fault

Issue description

The Steering Valve Controller (SVC) has detected an internal hardware or software failure. Associated internal errors can include software interpolation overflow, initialization failures, or coil supply switch state synchronization failures between the main and safety controllers.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect Series (180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Steiger & Quadtrac AFS Connect Series
  • Optum Series
  • Vestrum Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check power and ground sources to the steering valve controller, verifying intact fuses, proper supply voltage, and solid ground.

  2. Inspect wiring harness and local CAN bus connections for short-circuits, open circuits, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  3. Check software compatibility and calibration, ensuring UCM and SVC software are up to date.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the tractor and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the steering system.

Ensure the machine is safe to work on before proceeding with hydraulic component removal.

  2. Access the steering valve assembly.

Typically located at the base of the steering column under the dash console.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors routing to the steering valve controller.

    Carefully unplug the harness connections.

  4. Mark and disconnect the hydraulic lines attached to the steering valve.

Marking the lines ensures correct orientation during reassembly.

  5. Unbolt the mounting hardware and remove the faulty steering valve assembly.

Remove the old unit from the machine.

  6. Install the new steering valve assembly.

Reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors securely.

  7. Refill/bleed the hydraulic steering system as necessary.

Ensure all air is purged from the hydraulic lines.

  8. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the EST) to perform a steering system calibration.

This ensures the new controller is configured and recognized by the UCM.
