Case IH 299 – Engine Controller (ECM / ENG): Engine Shutdown by other than keyswitch (i.e. via data bus command)
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine was commanded to shut down by a signal sent over the CAN data bus from another controller (such as the Armrest, Transmission, or Implement controller) rather than the operator physically turning the ignition key switch to the "OFF" position. This is typically a protective shutdown triggered by a critical failure in another system or an emergency stop circuit being activated.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- MX series
- MX285
- Axial-Flow combines
Check the cause
Check for companion codes across all modules (Engine, Transmission, Armrest, etc.) as this code is usually a symptom of another primary fault triggering a protective shutdown.
Inspect CAN data bus lines for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections between the Engine ECM and cab controllers.
Test the ignition circuit, including the key switch and any emergency stop switches, to ensure they are not shorting out or sending false signals.
Repair steps
Read fault codes
Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port to read all active and stored fault codes across all modules.
Address companion codes
Address any companion fault codes first. If another module triggered a protective shutdown, repairing that specific issue will resolve the ENG 299 code.
Inspect wiring harness
If no other codes are present, visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECM and the cab controllers. Look for pushed pins, moisture intrusion, or rubbed wires. Repair or replace damaged wiring as necessary.
Test ignition switch
Test the ignition switch using a multimeter to ensure it is maintaining proper voltage in the "ON" position and not dropping the signal intermittently due to internal wear. Replace the switch if it fails testing.
Clear fault codes
Clear all fault codes using the diagnostic tool.
Test run machine
Start and test run the machine under load to verify that the unexpected shutdown does not reoccur.
