Case IH 2999 – ZDC Controller: Unknown fault information received from ZDC controller

Issue description

The Vehicle Control Module (VCM/UCM) is receiving unrecognized, corrupted, or out-of-range data packets from the ZDC controller over the CAN network.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series (CVT models)
  • Case IH Puma CVX / Maxxum CVX

Check the cause

  1. Check ZDC power supply by verifying fuses F-95 (5A) and F-102 (7.5A)

  2. Measure resistance across the CAN bus network at the diagnostic port (should be approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or disconnected module)

  3. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for accompanying transmission (4000-4999) or electro-hydraulic (5000-5999) fault codes

  4. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ZDC controller to the VCM/UCM for chafing, moisture ingress, or pushed pins

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect Fuses

Locate the Cab Power Distribution Module. Inspect and replace fuses F-95 (5A) and F-102 (7.5A) if blown. If they blow immediately upon replacement, trace the ZDC power circuit for a short to ground.

  3. Clean Connections

Locate the ZDC controller. Disconnect its main harness connectors. Use a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to clean the pins on both the controller and the harness.

  4. Software Flash

Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH EST laptop to the diagnostic port. Attempt to re-flash or update the firmware on the ZDC controller, as "unknown fault information" often stems from a software glitch or version mismatch between the ZDC and the VCM.

  5. Clear and Test

Erase the faults from the memory using the EST. Test drive the tractor to see if the CVT engages properly and if the code returns.

  6. Module Replacement

If the wiring is intact, the software is up to date, and the code persists alongside transmission operational issues, the ZDC controller has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • ZDC Controller (CVT Transmission Controller)

OEM Part number varies strictly by the specific tractor's Product Identification Number (PIN) and model year.

  • 5-Amp Blade Fuse

Generic automotive ATO/ATC fuse (For ZDC KL15 / Function circuit).

  • 7.5-Amp Blade Fuse

Generic automotive ATO/ATC fuse (For ZDC Main power circuit).
