Case IH 3 – Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC): Fuel tank level sender short to ground
Issue description
Non-Critical electrical fault. The controller is receiving a near-zero voltage signal from the fuel level sender circuit, indicating that the signal wire is shorting directly to the chassis ground or the sender itself has failed internally.

Check the cause
Inspect the fuel level sender on the fuel tank. Check if the connectors on the terminals are clean and tight.
Disconnect the wires from the sender unit to isolate the short. If the fault code changes (e.g., to Code 4: Open Circuit), the short is likely internal to the sender unit.
If the short to ground persists with the sender unplugged, trace the wiring in the engine/chassis harness back to the instrument cluster to look for rubbed, pinched, or bare wires.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor and locate the fuel tank level sender unit.
Located on the top or side of the fuel tank.
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sender unit.
Clean the terminal connections thoroughly.
Remove any dirt, corrosion, or debris.
Trace and repair any damaged wiring in the harness.
Perform this if a short to ground was found during the diagnostic phase.
Remove the mounting screws/lock ring holding the sender to the tank.
Perform this if the wiring is intact but the sender is internally shorted.
Remove the old sender unit and install the replacement fuel tank level sender.
Reconnect the electrical harness and turn the key on.
Verify that Fault Code 3 has cleared and the fuel gauge reads accurately.
