Case IH 30 – EDC (Electronic Draft Control) module / Hitch Controller: Signal Ground Open Circuit

Issue description

A break or disconnection in the electrical ground circuit that serves the tractor's Electronic Draft Control (EDC) system, specifically pointing to an open circuit between the EDC control panel, its sensors, and the central controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Magnum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Steiger Series
  • TM series
  • T6000
  • T7
  • 8240

Check the cause

  1. Inspect EDC control panel connectors (C120, C121, and C122) to ensure they are fully seated, undamaged, and pins are tight and in the correct position.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the EDC control panel to the central controller for chafing, cuts, or corrosion.

  3. Perform an open circuit test by disconnecting the EDC control panel connectors (C120/C121) and the central controller (XCM) connector (C533). Check for continuity on the ground circuit (e.g., between C120 pin 4 and C533 pin 23).

  4. Check for a short circuit to ground or between pins (e.g., between C120 pin 1 and C120 pin 4).

  5. Turn the key to the ON position and measure the voltage at the EDC connector (e.g., between C120 pin 1 and pin 4). It should read approximately +5 Volts. If not, the central controller (XCM) or software may be at fault.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during harness repair.

  2. Access the EDC Panel

Remove the right-hand console trim to access the EDC control panel and its wiring harness.

  3. Repair the Harness

If the open circuit test revealed a broken wire, locate the break along the harness routing. Splice and solder the broken wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the damaged connector pins using a harness repair kit.

  4. Replace the EDC Panel

If the harness and connectors test perfectly fine (continuity is good and +5V reference is present), the internal ground circuit of the EDC control panel has failed. Remove the mounting screws, disconnect the panel, and install a replacement EDC control panel.

  5. Reassembly and Testing

Reconnect all C120, C121, and C533 connectors. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the key on, clear the stored error code 30 from the H-Menu/diagnostic display, and test the hitch raise/lower functions for normal operation.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • EDC Control Panel

    81868882

Alternative/Superseded Part Number: 82002539. Fits Case IH and New Holland tractors with Electronic Draft Control (e.g., 8240, MXM series). Verify exact fitment with the machine's serial number as console layouts vary by cab package.

  • Wiring Harness / Connector Pins

Generic CNH electrical repair kit (part numbers vary based on the specific connector housing that requires repinning).

  • Central Controller (XCM)

Only replace if the controller fails to output the +5V reference voltage; part numbers are highly specific to the tractor's programmed options.
