Case IH 3001 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Foot Throttle Sensor - Signal Not Plausible
Issue description
The onboard computer is receiving an erratic, illogical, or out-of-bounds voltage signal from the foot throttle position sensor (accelerator pedal potentiometer) that does not align with expected operating parameters.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Farmall
- Magnum 235
- Magnum 280
- Magnum 340 Series 4
- Magnum 380 Tier 4B CVT
- Steiger Series
- Maxxum Series
- Puma Series
- Farmall Series
Check the cause
Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the foot pedal to the ECU. Look for chafing, heat damage, or broken wires.
Connector Check: Check the sensor's electrical connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or loose contacts, which can interrupt voltage flow and cause erratic signal readings.
Ground Wire Test: Test the ground wire for continuity. A broken ground wire is a common cause of fluctuating throttle output that mimics a failed ECU.
Voltage Tests: Check the sensor supply voltage. It should be a steady 5V reference. The system will flag errors if the supply voltage drops under 4.8V or spikes over 5.2V/5.3V for 5 seconds.
Voltage Tests: Check the sensor signal voltage. Ensure the signal does not drop below 200mV or exceed 5.3V when the pedal is actuated.
Repair steps
Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery
to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the foot throttle pedal assembly
on the cab floor.
Carefully disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector
from the foot throttle sensor.
Remove the retaining hardware (clips or bolts)
securing the sensor to the pedal assembly/bracket.
Remove the faulty sensor and install the replacement part.
Secure the retaining hardware and reconnect the electrical harness
ensuring it clicks firmly into place.
Reconnect the battery.
Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH EASy tool or Jaltest software) to clear the 3001 fault code
from the ECM.
Start the engine and test the foot pedal
to ensure smooth RPM response without surging or dead spots.
