3004

Case IH 3004 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine hand throttle error received over the CAN bus

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost the throttle position signal. The ECU triggers this code when it receives an error message from the cab controller stating that the throttle signal is non-existent, out of range, or disconnected.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • 7010
  • 7120
  • 8010
  • 8120
  • 9010
  • 9120
  • 7230
  • 8230
  • 9230
  • AFX8010
  • Steiger Tractors
  • Magnum Tractors

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated codes related to the armrest controller or CAN bus communication, as a down CAN bus can cause this symptom

  2. Visually inspect the hand throttle sensor in the right-hand console to ensure connectors are fully seated, undamaged, and pins are tight

  3. Disconnect the sensor and test the wiring harness for continuity between the throttle sensor and the cab controller, looking for open circuits or shorts to ground/power

  4. Verify if the potentiometer/sensor within the throttle assembly has failed, resulting in a 'No Signal' condition

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Console

Remove the trim panels on the right-hand console/armrest to access the underside of the hand throttle assembly.

  3. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the electrical connector at the throttle. Inspect for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary. If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the broken wires.

  4. Replace the Throttle

If the wiring tests good but the fault persists, the throttle sensor has failed internally. Unbolt the defective hand throttle assembly from the console and install the new OEM replacement part.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector into the new throttle assembly, reinstall the console trim, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Turn the key to the ON position. Use the in-cab display or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 3004 fault code. Start the engine and verify smooth throttle response through the full range of motion.
