Case IH 3008 (DTC 2213) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / ECU A-095: Engine coolant temperature sensor voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The engine's coolant temperature sensor is a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor. The control module monitors the analog input voltage from this sensor. A "lower than expected" voltage typically means the circuit is experiencing a short to a low source (ground) or the sensor's internal resistance has dropped out of the calibrated range.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a sensor resistance test on the Coolant Temperature Sensor (B-016) using a multimeter to verify it reads between 332 Ω and 10.149K Ω (at -10 °C to 80 °C).

  2. Inspect the engine plug connector (X-917, pin 39) and wiring harness for corrosion, moisture, backed-out pins, or a short circuit to ground.

  3. Check system voltage to ensure the charging system is operating correctly and no faulty external power supplies are causing voltage irregularities.

  4. Verify the Central Control Unit (CCU) or Universal Control Module (UCM) is not faulty and misinterpreting sensor data.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to protect the ECU from voltage spikes during testing.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the engine coolant temperature sensor, typically located on the engine block near the thermostat housing.

  3. Inspect the Connector

    Unplug the sensor. Inspect both the sensor terminals and the wiring harness connector for damage or coolant intrusion.

  4. Test the Circuit

    Using a digital multimeter, check the wiring harness for continuity back to the ECU and ensure there is no short to ground.

  5. Test/Replace the Sensor

    Measure the resistance across the sensor pins. If the resistance falls outside the 332 Ω - 10.149K Ω range (depending on ambient temperature), the sensor is defective.

  6. Installation

    If replacing, partially drain the coolant to prevent spillage. Remove the old sensor, install the new OEM sensor, and torque to manufacturer specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear DTC 2213 (3008). Start the engine and verify that the temperature gauge reads accurately and the code does not return.
