3010

Case IH 3010 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Intake Manifold Boost Temperature Sensor Circuit - Signal Above Range Max

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the intake manifold boost temperature sensor is higher than the maximum allowable threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a defective sensor, or a short circuit to an external power source.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
  • Steiger series
  • Maxxum
  • MXM
  • MXU
  • Farmall series
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness leading to the intake manifold boost temperature sensor for breaks, chafing, or an open circuit, and inspect the connector for corrosion or loose pins.

  2. Test the circuit to ensure it is not shorted to an external power source or shorted to ground.

  3. Test the sensor's resistance to determine if it is internally defective.

  4. If the wiring is intact and the sensor tests good, verify the Engine Controller, though replacing it is considered a last resort.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the intake manifold boost temperature sensor on the engine's intake manifold or turbocharger outlet piping. (Note: On some larger tractors like the MX Magnum, you may need to remove the left/right fan shields or loosen the turbocharger elbow clamp to gain clear access).

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove Sensor

Unthread and remove the defective sensor from the intake manifold.

  5. Install New Sensor

Thread the new OEM replacement sensor into the manifold and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

Reconnect the electrical plug to the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 3010 fault code from the Engine ECU. Start the engine to verify the code does not return.
