Case IH 3011 – Engine Controller / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Intake Manifold Boost Temperature Sensor Circuit - Signal Below Range Min

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected the voltage signal from the Intake Manifold Boost Temperature Sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold, indicating a short circuit to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or a failure within the engine controller.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Intake Manifold Boost Temperature Sensor and its electrical connector for physical damage, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Test the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine Controller for a short circuit to ground.

  3. Perform a sensor disconnect test: disconnect the sensor. If the fault code changes from 3011 to 3010 (Signal Above Range Max), the wiring is intact and the sensor is internally shorted.

  4. Perform a plausibility check using a diagnostic tool: compare the intake air temperature reading with the engine coolant and engine oil temperatures when the machine is completely cold. They should read approximately the same ambient temperature.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine and disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the Intake Manifold Boost Temperature Sensor (typically mounted directly on the intake manifold or the boost piping leading from the turbocharger).

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.

  4. Repair or replace wiring harness

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring, repair or replace the affected section of the engine wiring harness.

  5. Remove defective sensor

    If the wiring is good, use the appropriate wrench to unthread and remove the defective temperature sensor.

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new OEM Intake Manifold Boost Temperature Sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Reconnect battery and turn ignition on

    Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on.

  9. Clear fault codes

    Clear the fault codes using an EASy tool or equivalent diagnostic scanner. In some systems, a system restart will restore self-learning parameters if the plausibility check passes.

  10. Replace Engine Controller

    If the fault persists after replacing the sensor and verifying the wiring is 100% intact, replace the Engine Controller as a last resort.
