Case IH 3011 – Transmission Controller (TCU): Engine Has Stalled Causing the Transmission to Disengage
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected no (0 RPM) or extremely low engine speed. The transmission controller relies on the engine speed signal (broadcasted from the engine controller via the Tractor Data Bus/CAN network) to maintain clutch engagement. If the signal drops to zero, the transmission disengages to protect the powertrain.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- STX Steiger
- Magnum Series (MX200, 235-340 Series 4)
- Steiger / STX Series (STX 350-600, STX 450)
- Puma Series
Check the cause
Verify if the engine actually stalled due to operator error or heavy load (if so, this code is a normal protective response).
Check alternator output and tachometer terminal frequency, as the RPM signal is derived from the alternator on many models.
Inspect the engine speed/crankshaft position sensor face for debris or damage, and ensure the air gap is correct.
Test the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine Speed Sensor, Engine ECU, and CAN bus for open circuits, chafing, or shorts to ground.
Repair steps
Clear the Code
If the tractor simply stalled under load, restart the engine, clear the fault code, and test drive the machine. If the code does not return, no repair is needed.
Alternator Replacement
If the alternator is failing to send an RPM signal (or has a dead tach output), disconnect the batteries, remove the serpentine belt, and replace the alternator.
Sensor Replacement
If the engine speed sensor is faulty, disconnect its wiring harness, unbolt the sensor from the engine block/flywheel housing, and install a new sensor.
Harness Repair
If the CAN bus or sensor wiring is damaged, splice and heat-shrink the broken wires or replace the affected harness section.
Recalibrate
After replacing transmission or engine control components, it is highly recommended to perform a transmission calibration once the tractor is warmed up to ensure proper clutch fill pressures.
