Case IH 3015 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Fuel Temperature Sensor voltage is higher than expected (Signal Above Range Max)

Issue description

The control module has detected that the raw voltage value of the fuel temperature sensor signal circuit (B-9002 or B-017) is above 4.93 V (>4936.46 mV) for more than 500 milliseconds. This almost always indicates an open circuit (such as a broken wire, unplugged connector, or internally failed sensor) or a short to power.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Code: Turn the key on and access the diagnostic menu (on Magnum tractors, hold the open book/hourglass button on the A-post until the diagnostic menu appears, then select the Engine module) to confirm 3015 is active.

  2. Harness Visual Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the fuel temperature sensor. Note: A known issue on Magnum tractors involves the plastic protective loom rubbing the internal wires bare against the engine, causing open circuits or shorts.

  3. Voltage Check: Disconnect the sensor. Turn the key ON and measure the harness connector. You should see a 5V reference and a good ground. If the signal wire shows battery voltage (12V) or the ground is missing, the harness is damaged.

  4. Sensor Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the pins of the disconnected fuel temperature sensor. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (open loop/infinite resistance), the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground if you need to perform wiring repairs.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the fuel temperature sensor (B-9002), which is typically threaded into the fuel rail or the injection pump housing.

  3. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector by pulling the locking tab outward and sliding the plug off.

  4. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed wires, repair the broken wire(s) using weather-sealed butt connectors, and re-loom the harness so it does not rub against vibrating engine components.

  5. Remove old sensor

    If the sensor itself failed, unscrew the old sensor from the housing.

  6. Clean housing

    Clean the threads on the housing to ensure no dirt or debris enters the fuel system.

  7. Install new sensor

    Thread the new fuel temperature sensor into the housing and tighten it securely.

  8. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the lock clicks into place.

  9. Verify repair

    Turn the key on, navigate back to the diagnostic menu, and clear the fault codes. Start the engine to verify the code does not return and that fuel delivery is operating efficiently.
