3016 (F-174-04)

Case IH 3016 (F-174-04) – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Fuel temperature sensor voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The sensor is registering a voltage drop that falls outside the normal operating parameters, often pointing to a short circuit or a failed sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Farmall 115U Tractors
  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4) Tractors
  • STX Steiger Tractors (350 to 600 HP)
  • CX series tractors
  • CS series tractors
  • C series tractors
  • Maxxum MX series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness leading to the fuel temperature sensor for any visible damage, rubbing, or breaks.

  2. Test the circuit to see if the sensor is defective or if there is a short circuit to an external source (specifically a short to ground, which causes the low voltage reading).

  3. Ensure the electrical connector is securely fastened and free of corrosion or diesel fuel contamination.

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

Locate the fuel temperature sensor, which is typically mounted on the fuel rail or the injection pump housing.

  2. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  3. Remove sensor

Unscrew and remove the old fuel temperature sensor from the housing.

  4. Clean threads

Clean the threads on the fuel rail/pump housing to ensure a proper seal.

  5. Install sensor

Install the new replacement sensor and tighten it to the specified torque.

  6. Reconnect connector

Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  7. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes. Note: If the Engine Controller (EDC) itself was replaced during this repair, you must follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters (Zero Fuel Calibration).
