Case IH 3017 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / VCM (Vehicle Control Module): Air Filter Clogging sensor switch implausible

Issue description

This fault is triggered when the air filter clogging switch indicates that the air filter is clogged, but the system detects no air flow because the engine is stopped. A clogged filter can only create a pressure differential when air is actively flowing through the intake. Therefore, a "clogged" signal while the engine is off is physically impossible (implausible). This indicates that the switch is stuck closed, there is a short circuit in the wiring, or there is an internal ECU error.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum series
  • Magnum Pro series
  • Puma series
  • Farmall 55C
  • Farmall 70JX
  • Farmall 115C
  • CVX 140
  • CVX 150
  • CVX 170
  • Axial-Flow Combine 5140
  • Axial-Flow Combine 6140
  • Axial-Flow Combine 7140
  • Axial-Flow Combine 7240
  • Case Construction STM N Series Loaders

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical condition of the primary and secondary air filters. Ensure there are no severe blockages in the air intake pipe.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the air filter clogging switch and the Engine ECU. Look for broken wires, chafing, or a short circuit to ground/battery.

  3. With the engine OFF and the key ON, use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to check the state of the switch. It is typically a 65 mBar pressure contactor switch. If it reads 0V (indicating a clog/light ON) while the engine is off, the switch is stuck or shorted.

  4. Disconnect the sensor and check for corrosion or moisture inside the connector pins, which can cause a false bridge/short.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery negative lead to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the air filter clogging switch. It is fitted directly on the air inlet pipe between the air filter housing and the turbocharger.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Carefully remove the electrical connector from the air filter clogging sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

Unscrew or unclip the faulty air filter clogging switch from the air inlet pipe. Note: On some combine models, you may need to move wiring harness branches out of the way to access it.

  5. Install New Sensor

Thread or clip the new air filter clogging switch into the intake pipe.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector to the sensor. Reconnect the battery negative lead and close the hood/panels.

  7. Clear Codes

Turn on the ignition and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 3017 fault code from the ECU memory. Start the engine to verify the code does not return.
