3018

Case IH 3018 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / EDC): Boost Pressure Signal - ABOVE NORMAL

Issue description

The turbocharger is producing excessive boost pressure beyond the acceptable warning limit. This is typically caused by a mechanical issue such as a stuck turbocharger wastegate, a control issue, or a shorted/faulty boost pressure sensor sending an artificially high voltage signal.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • 7010 Combine
  • SR130
  • SR160
  • SR175
  • SV185

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the boost pressure sensor wiring harness and connectors for damage, specifically looking for a short to low source or short to ground.

  2. Check all boost hoses and connections for blockages or faults.

  3. Inspect the turbocharger wastegate to see if it is mechanically stuck closed, which would cause an overboost condition.

  4. Test the boost pressure sensor voltage with a multimeter to verify if it is outputting the correct voltage relative to the actual manifold pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Connect a diagnostic tool

Verify the active 3018 fault code and check freeze-frame data for manifold pressure readings.

  2. Visually inspect the boost pressure sensor

The sensor is often located on the intake manifold, just above the oil filter on some models like the 7010 combine.

  3. Test the wiring harness

Disconnect the sensor and test the wiring harness for continuity and shorts. Repair any damaged wiring or clean corroded connector pins.

  4. Check the turbocharger wastegate linkage

Manually actuate the turbocharger wastegate linkage to ensure it moves freely. If it is seized, the turbocharger or wastegate actuator may need to be repaired or replaced.

  5. Replace the Boost Pressure Sensor

If the wiring is sound and the wastegate operates normally, replace the faulty Boost Pressure Sensor.

  6. Verify the repair

Clear the fault codes and run the engine under load to verify that boost pressure remains within normal parameters and the code does not return.
