3021

Case IH 3021 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Boost Pressure Sensor - (via CAN) No Signal / Null

Issue description

The engine control module is not receiving a valid signal or communication from the intake manifold boost pressure sensor over the CAN bus network.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Maxxum series tractors
  • Case IH Puma series tractors
  • Case IH 7010 Combines
  • Case 580 Super N Backhoes
  • Case F-Series Wheel Loaders (721F, 821F, 921F)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the boost pressure sensor and the Engine ECM for any chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. Test the CAN bus lines leading to the sensor to verify there is no open circuit, short to ground, or short to battery power.

  4. Clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool and run the engine to see if the code returns, ruling out a temporary voltage glitch. If it returns immediately and wiring is intact, the sensor has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the boost pressure sensor, which is typically mounted directly on the intake manifold or just above the engine oil filter housing (location varies slightly by engine model).

  3. Disconnect

Depress the locking tab and carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

Unscrew or unbolt the faulty boost pressure sensor from the manifold.

  5. Install

Install the new OEM boost pressure sensor. Ensure the O-ring or sealing washer is properly seated. Torque to the manufacturer's specification (do not overtighten, as the manifold housing can crack).

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks securely.

  7. Verify

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3021 code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the engine has recovered full power.
