Case IH 3022 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Boost pressure sensor - signal not plausible
Issue description
The engine control system is receiving a voltage or pressure reading from the boost pressure sensor that does not make logical sense given the current engine operating conditions (e.g., RPM, load, and atmospheric pressure).
Applies to these machines
10 machines- Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
- MX Series
- TG Series
- Puma Series
- Farmall 115U
- Axial-Flow 5130
- Axial-Flow 6130
- Axial-Flow 7010
- 580 Super N
- 480 Industrial Tractors
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the boost pressure sensor for chafing, breaks, or corrosion that could cause a short or open circuit.
Verify the ambient atmospheric pressure sensor is reading correctly, as the ECU compares this to the boost pressure; a defective ambient sensor (often code 3023) can cause a false 3022 code.
Check live data via an Electronic Service Tool to see if the boost pressure sensor is stuck on a default value or fluctuating erratically.
Repair steps
Locate the boost pressure sensor
Locate the boost pressure sensor (typically mounted on the intake manifold, often just above the oil filter depending on the specific FPT engine model).
Inspect the electrical harness
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor and inspect the pins for damage or moisture.
Test wiring continuity
Test the wiring continuity back to the Engine ECU.
Evaluate sensor failure
If the wiring is intact and the ECU's internal atmospheric pressure sensor is functioning normally, the boost pressure sensor itself has failed internally.
Replace the sensor
Remove the defective boost pressure sensor and install the replacement part.
Clear fault codes and verify
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool and run the engine under load to verify the code does not return.
