Case IH 3022 – INST2 or INST: Invalid Configuration -- Engine has been run Overspeed
Issue description
Engine RPM has exceeded the maximum safe operating limit programmed into the ECM. This can be an event code triggered by external physical forces (such as a heavy implement pushing the tractor down a steep grade, or an improper downshift), or it can be caused by a malfunctioning Engine Speed Sensor sending erratic, artificially high RPM spikes to the controller.

Check the cause
Interview the operator to determine if the machine was recently operated on a steep decline with a heavy load or if an aggressive downshift occurred (diagnosing an operational overspeed event).
Check for accompanying fault codes in the INST or ENG controllers. Specifically look for INST2 3020 (Engine Speed sensor failed), which indicates a sensor or wiring issue rather than a true overspeed.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Engine Speed Sensor (located on the engine block near the crankshaft or flywheel) for chafing, melting, or loose connections.
Use the tractor's diagnostic display or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live engine RPM. Look for erratic readings, dropouts, or sudden spikes that do not match actual engine pitch.
Repair steps
Resolve Operational Overspeed (Scenario A)
If the overspeed was confirmed to be an operator/environmental event, no physical repair is necessary. Access the tractor's diagnostic menu or connect the EST. Clear the fault codes from the INST/INST2 controller. Test drive the machine under normal load to verify the code does not return.
Prepare for Sensor Replacement (Scenario B)
If a faulty sensor is suspected, turn off the engine, remove the key, and engage the parking brake. Locate the Engine Speed Sensor on the engine block.
Inspect and Remove Old Sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-back terminals; clean with contact cleaner if necessary. Remove the retaining bolt securing the speed sensor to the housing. Carefully pull the old sensor out of the bore.
Install New Sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new Engine Speed Sensor with clean engine oil. Insert the new sensor into the housing and install the retaining bolt, torquing it to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Verify Repair
Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Turn the ignition on, clear the stored 3022 (and any 3020) fault codes from the instrument controller, and start the engine to verify the repair.
