3028 (F-100-18) - ECU

Case IH 3028 (F-100-18) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / ENG / Motor): Engine Oil Pressure is too low

Issue description

The engine's oil pressure has dropped below the normal, safe operating range, or the oil pressure sensor is sending a falsely low reading to the system.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series (225, 235-340 Series 4, 250, 255, 310, 335, MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Case IH Steiger / STX Series 4WD Tractors (STX275, STX280, STX325, STX330, Steiger 280, 330, 335, 350-600 HP)
  • Case IH Puma Series Tractors
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (2577, 2588, 5088, 6088, 7088)
  • Case Construction Equipment 580 Super N backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Stop the engine immediately to prevent severe internal engine damage

  2. Check the engine oil level on the dipstick and inspect the entire oil system for visible leaks

  3. Inspect the sensor wiring harness for damage and check the contact surfaces of the connector pins for oxidation or loose connections

  4. Check the +5V supply voltage to the oil pressure sensor

  5. Test the oil pressure sensor for accuracy and internal short circuits to rule out false readings

Repair steps

  1. Shut down machine

Shut down the machine immediately upon receiving the 3028 fault code to avoid catastrophic engine failure.

  2. Verify oil level

Verify the physical oil level on the dipstick and top up the fluid if it is low.

  3. Inspect wiring harness

Disconnect the wiring harness from the engine oil pressure sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion. Clean the contacts if oxidation is present.

  4. Verify supply voltage

Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct +5V supply voltage from the ECU.

  5. Replace sensor

If the wiring and voltage are correct, replace the engine oil pressure sensor, as it is likely defective or shorting out.

  6. Perform mechanical diagnosis

If replacing the sensor does not clear the active code, the issue is a genuine mechanical low oil pressure condition (e.g., failing oil pump, worn bearings, or low piston cooling pressure), which requires a complete mechanical engine teardown and diagnosis.
