Case IH 3029 (F-100-03) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ENG / EDC): Oil Pressure Sensor – Short circuit to Battery
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit is receiving a voltage signal from the engine oil pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting to a power source (either the 5V reference or 12V battery power) or an internal short within the sensor itself.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate the engine oil pressure sensor on the engine block. Inspect the 3-pin connector for oil intrusion, water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.
Harness Isolation Test: Disconnect the sensor. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and check the active fault codes. If the code changes to 3030 (Short to Ground) or 3031 (Open Circuit / Hardware Error), the wiring harness is likely intact, and the sensor has failed internally. If code 3029 remains active while the sensor is unplugged, there is a physical short to battery voltage in the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the Engine ECU.
Voltage Check: Using a multimeter, probe the disconnected harness connector. You should find a 5V supply, a ground, and a signal return wire. Ensure the signal wire is not receiving stray 12V battery voltage from a rubbed wire loom.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Turn off the master battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the oil pressure sensor on the engine block (location varies slightly depending on whether it is an 8.3L, 8.7L, 9.0L, or 12.9L engine, but it is typically near the main oil gallery or oil filter housing).
Clean the Area
Wipe away dirt and grease from around the sensor base to prevent debris from falling into the engine oil passage.
Remove the Sensor
Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector. Use a deep socket or wrench to carefully unthread the faulty sensor. Have a shop rag ready, as a small amount of residual oil may drip out.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Reconnect
Plug the 3-pin electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Test
Turn the master battery switch back on. Start the engine and monitor the A-post display or Pro 700/1200 monitor. Verify that the engine oil pressure reads normally and that fault code 3029 has moved to "Inactive" or cleared entirely.
