Case IH 3030-16 - DEC – Transmission Controller (TCU): Hydro static control unit solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage high

Issue description

The controller is detecting a voltage on the solenoid circuit that exceeds the normal operating parameters, which is usually caused by a short to battery power (short to high) in the wiring harness or an internal failure within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Controller Configuration: Ensure the correct tractor model configuration and software are installed in the instrumentation and transmission controllers, as configuration errors can trigger false 3030-series transmission faults.

  2. Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the hydrostatic control unit on the transmission control valve. Look for chafed wires that may be shorting to a 12V power source.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the hydrostatic control unit solenoid. Check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  4. Voltage Test: With the key ON and the solenoid disconnected, measure the voltage at the harness connector. If battery voltage is present on the signal/ground return wire, there is a short to power in the harness.

  5. Solenoid Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins to determine if the solenoid is internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the hydrostatic control unit, which is typically mounted to the transmission control valve assembly.

  3. Clean the area around the hydrostatic control unit to prevent debris from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty CVT/hydrostatic solenoid.

  5. If the diagnostic checks pointed to a wiring issue, repair the shorted section of the harness or replace the affected harness overlay.

  6. If the solenoid itself is faulty, remove the retaining hardware (often a snap ring or retaining bracket) and pull the solenoid cartridge from the valve body.

  7. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid and install it into the control unit. Secure it with the retaining hardware.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  9. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic service tool and test the hydrostatic control lever to ensure forward/reverse travel actuates correctly without triggering the fault.
