Case IH 3033 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Oil Temperature Sensor - Signal Not Plausible (Compared with Coolant Temperature)

Issue description

The engine's computer is receiving a reading from the engine oil temperature sensor that contradicts the reading from the engine coolant temperature sensor. This severe mismatch indicates that one of the sensors is providing false data, or there is a severe fluid system malfunction.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that both the engine oil and engine coolant are at their proper levels and that the cooling/lubrication systems are functioning correctly.

  2. Use a diagnostic scan tool to view the live data for both the Oil Temperature and Coolant Temperature. Note which sensor is reporting an erratic, frozen, or out-of-range value.

  3. Inspect the wiring harnesses for both sensors. Look for chafed wires, broken connections, or corrosion inside the plugs (often caused by a short circuit to ground or external power source).

  4. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the suspect sensor and compare it against the OEM specifications for the ambient temperature.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, allow it to cool completely, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Drain Fluid

    Depending on which sensor failed (oil or coolant), drain the respective fluid below the level of the sensor port to prevent spills.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the faulty temperature sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unthread the defective sensor from the engine block using a deep socket or wrench.

  5. Prepare the New Sensor

    Clean the threads of the engine port. If the new sensor does not come with pre-applied thread sealant, apply a liquid thread sealant or Teflon tape to prevent leaks.

  6. Install the Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the port and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Refill Fluids

    Refill the engine oil or coolant to the proper level.

  9. Test

    Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for leaks. Use a diagnostic tool to clear Fault Code 3033 and verify that the dash temperature gauges are reading correctly.
