3034 (F-175-03) - ECU

Case IH 3034 (F-175-03) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine oil temperature sensor voltage is higher than expected.

Issue description

A "voltage higher than expected" fault typically indicates an open circuit or a short-to-power in the sensor's wiring circuit, causing the signal voltage returning to the controller to max out.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 115U Efficient Power
  • Magnum series (e.g., 235, 250-380, 340)
  • Maxxum series (MXM120, MXM130, MXM155, MXM175, MXM190)
  • Steiger Quadtrac models
  • Case IH 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Case Backhoe Loaders (580N, 570NXT)
  • Skid Steers (SV250, SV300)
  • Wheel Loaders (721F, 921G, 1021G, 1121G)
  • Machines equipped with NEF engines (e.g., F4DFE4131, F4DFE4132, F4DFE4133 series)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the engine oil temperature sensor and the ECU for chafing, broken wires (open circuit), or wires shorting to a power source.

  2. Disconnect the engine cable from the sensor and the ECU to inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture.

  3. Test the sensor to determine if the internal thermistor has failed open, assuming wiring and connectors are intact.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery

    This prevents electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the engine oil temperature sensor

Locate it on the engine block (refer to your specific engine's diagram, such as the NEF engine layout).

  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness connector

    Disconnect it from the sensor.

  4. Unthread and remove the faulty temperature sensor

Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of oil may leak.

  5. Install the new temperature sensor

Ensure the sealing ring/gasket is in place and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harness

Reconnect it to the sensor and the ECU.

  7. Reconnect the battery and clear the fault code

Turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool or the service display to clear the 3034 fault code.
