Case IH 3039 – Engine ECU: Cruise Control Switch Evaluation Error

Issue description

Case IH Fault Code 3039 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving an implausible, erratic, or out-of-range electrical signal from the cruise control switches (either the On/Off switch or the Increase/Decrease toggle). Because the controller cannot accurately evaluate the driver's input, it disables the cruise control system as a safety precaution.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the cruise control rocker switches on the right-hand console/armrest. Check if the switches are physically sticking, damaged, or packed with dirt/debris.

  2. EST Monitoring: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and navigate to the Engine ECU inputs. Monitor the state of the cruise control switches while toggling them to see if the ECM registers the correct open/closed states.

  3. Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness running from the right-hand console to the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires causing a short to ground, short to power, or an open circuit.

  4. Continuity Test: Unplug the cruise control switches and use a multimeter to test for proper continuity across the switch terminals when toggled.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate switches

Locate the cruise control switches on the right-hand fender console or armrest panel.

  3. Remove trim panel

Carefully pry up the retaining clips or remove the screws securing the right-hand console trim panel to access the underside of the switches.

  4. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the back of the affected cruise control switch.

  5. Remove faulty switch

Depress the plastic retaining tabs on the sides of the faulty switch and push it up and out of the console panel.

  6. Install new switch

Snap the new OEM replacement switch into the panel until it clicks securely into place.

  7. Reconnect harness

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new switch.

  8. Reassemble console

Reinstall the console trim panel and reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear code and test

Turn the ignition on and use the EST to clear fault code 3039 (or allow the system to self-clear upon detecting a valid switch signal). Test the cruise control operation.
