3045

Case IH 3045 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Vehicle Speed Sensing - Signal Below Range Min.

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the signal voltage or frequency coming from the vehicle speed sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a short circuit to ground in the sensor wiring, or a complete internal failure of the speed sensor itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 235–340 (Series 4)
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum (100-140)
  • Optum series
  • T8.xxx Series
  • T5
  • T6
  • T7 series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the vehicle speed sensor and its electrical connector for dirt, corrosion, or physical damage.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the speed sensor back to the Engine ECM. Look for chafed wires that might be shorting to the chassis (ground) or broken wires causing an open circuit.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check for a short to ground on the signal wire. Verify continuity between the sensor connector pins and the corresponding ECM pins.

  4. If the wiring is intact and no shorts are found, the sensor itself has likely failed internally and is no longer generating a plausible PWM signal.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission/drivetrain housing.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing. (Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission/hydraulic fluid may seep out).

  5. Install

Lubricate the O-ring on the new speed sensor with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 3045 fault code. Test drive the tractor to verify the speedometer registers correctly and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Vehicle Speed Sensor / Transmission Speed Sensor

    4897242

Common on newer Case IH/New Holland T-series and Maxxum models. Always verify the exact part number against your machine's serial number (PIN) in the Case IH parts catalog, as sensor lengths and connector types can vary slightly between the Magnum, Puma, and Steiger transmission configurations.

  • Vehicle Speed Sensor / Transmission Speed Sensor
