Case IH 3046 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Vehicle Speed Sensing - Signal Not Plausible

Issue description

The control module is receiving a reading from the vehicle speed sensor that does not logically align with other operating parameters (such as engine RPM, gear selection, or secondary speed sensors).

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Optum
  • Case IH Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the speed sensor wiring harness for defects, including shorts to ground, shorts to the battery, or open circuits

  2. Check the sealed multi-pin weather-pack connector at the sensor for moisture, corrosion, or loose pins

  3. Verify associated symptoms such as erratic gear shifts, loss of speedometer readings on the dash, or defaulting to limp-mode

  4. Save the error log, erase it, and restart the ECU. If the fault returns immediately upon movement, the sensor or its wiring is actively failing

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Locate the vehicle/transmission speed sensor. Depending on the exact model and transmission option, it is typically mounted directly on the transmission casing or the upper side of the PTO housing.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the multi-pin wiring harness from the sensor.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Remove the retaining bolt on the integrated mounting tab and pull the sensor straight out of the casing.

  4. Inspect the Port

Briefly inspect the internal geared target wheel through the sensor port to ensure there is no severe internal mechanical damage causing the implausible reading.

  5. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new sensor. Ensure the pre-installed heavy-duty synthetic rubber O-ring is properly seated to guarantee a leak-free seal against hot transmission oil splash zones.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

Bolt the mounting tab down to ensure the precise alignment gap distance over the internal gear is maintained. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Calibrate/Clear

Clear the EDC fault codes using a diagnostic tool (like Jaltest or the OEM interface) and test drive the tractor to ensure the speedometer reads correctly and Code 3046 does not return.
