3049

Case IH 3049 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Battery voltage signal - ABOVE NORMAL / Air Filter Pressure is too high

Issue description

Code 3049 indicates the system voltage supplied to the control module is too high, indicating a potential overcharging issue. The symptom 'Air Filter Pressure is too high' indicates the air filter restriction switch is closed or the pressure differential sensor is reading extremely high due to a clogged filter or failed sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger tractors
  • Magnum tractors
  • Axial-Flow combine harvesters

Check the cause

  1. For the 3049 Voltage Issue: Use a multimeter to test the battery voltage while the engine is running. If it exceeds normal charging limits (>14.5V), the alternator/regulator is overcharging.

  2. For the Air Filter Pressure Issue: Check the primary and secondary engine air filters for severe dirt, dust, or debris accumulation.

  3. For the Air Filter Pressure Issue: Check the air filter pressure sensor readings when the engine is off. If it indicates a blocked filter while not running, the sensor or wiring is defective.

  4. For the Air Filter Pressure Issue: Inspect the air filter pressure sensor connector for oxidation, broken wires, or a short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Test alternator output

Test the alternator output. If voltage is too high, replace the alternator/voltage regulator assembly.

  2. Clear codes and verify voltage

Clear the codes and verify system voltage returns to normal.

  3. Access air filter housing

Turn off the machine and open the engine compartment. Unlatch and remove the cover to the engine air filter housing.

  4. Inspect and replace air filters

Carefully remove the primary (outer) air filter. Inspect the secondary (inner) safety filter. If the primary filter is heavily soiled, replace both filters. (Do not attempt to blow out a severely clogged filter).

  5. Inspect pressure sensor wiring

Locate the air filter pressure differential sensor on the intake piping. Disconnect the wiring harness and inspect the pins for corrosion.

  6. Replace pressure sensor

If the filters are clean but the code persists, replace the air filter pressure sensor.

  7. Clear codes and verify pressure

Clear the ECU fault codes and run the engine to verify the pressure drop is back within normal limits.
