Case IH 3055 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller: Vehicle Speed Sensing (Tacho) - PWM Average Frequency Below Limit

The control module is receiving a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal from the vehicle speed sensor, but the average frequency of that signal has dropped below the minimum acceptable detection limit. This typically points to a failing sensor, a short to ground in the wiring, or a disconnected/corroded harness preventing the speed signal from reaching the controller.

   Locate the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission housing or rear axle and visually inspect the wiring harness routing for chafing, pinching, or a short to ground.

   Disconnect the sensor pigtail and check for damaged, loose, or pushed-back connector pins, as well as water intrusion or debris.

   Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct supply voltage and has a solid ground. Check the signal wire for continuity between the sensor connector and the ECM pins.

   If wiring is intact and connections are clean, clear the error log, restart the tractor, and test drive. If the code immediately returns and the speedometer drops out, the sensor has failed internally.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the machine to cool down.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission/vehicle speed sensor on the transmission housing.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor's pigtail.

   Removal

   Remove the single mounting bolt securing the speed sensor to the housing. Carefully pull the old sensor straight out.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor (if applicable) with a small amount of clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the mounting bolt securely.

   Reconnect

   Plug the 3-pin electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Secure any loose wiring with zip ties to prevent future chafing.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Turn the ignition on. Access the diagnostic menu on the cab display (or use a diagnostic service tool) to clear the stored 3055 fault code from the ECM.

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor to verify that the vehicle speed registers correctly on the dash and that the fault code does not return.
