3057

Case IH 3057 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module) / EDC: Timeout of CAN Message High Resolution Wheel Speed

Issue description

This indicates a communication failure on the CAN bus network. Specifically, the control module is not receiving the high-resolution wheel speed signal data from the Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit or the transmission/wheel speed sensors within the expected timeframe (timeout).

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum Series (180, 200, 220, 225, 235, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Companion Codes: Check if other CAN timeout codes are present (e.g., 3058). Multiple timeout codes usually point to a main CAN bus failure rather than a single sensor issue.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Harnesses: Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring (CAN A / Vehicle CAN) between the Engine ECU, the Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit, and the wheel/transmission speed sensors. Look for chafed wires, open circuits, or short circuits to ground/battery.

  3. Check Connectors for Moisture: Disconnect the plugs at the ECU and the speed sensors. Check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins, which are common causes of CAN bus interference.

  4. Verify Power and Ground: Check the battery voltage and ground distribution blocks. A weak ground or voltage drop anywhere in the system can disrupt CAN communication.

  5. Live Data Test: Use a dealer-level diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or Jaltest) to monitor the live wheel speed data. If the sensor reads 'No Communication' or drops out intermittently when the harness is wiggled, the fault is isolated to that circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery before servicing CAN bus components or swapping sensors to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connections

If moisture or light corrosion was found during diagnostics, clean the connector pins with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them. Ensure the connector clicks in securely.

  3. Repair Harness

If the wiring harness is damaged, splice and repair the CAN lines using OEM-approved waterproof connectors, ensuring the twisted-pair wiring remains twisted to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring tests perfectly but the ECU still reports a timeout/no communication from the wheel speed sensor, locate the transmission/wheel speed sensor (location varies by transmission type; check your specific model's service manual). Remove the retaining bolt, pull the old sensor, and install the new OEM replacement.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Use your diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3057 fault code. Test drive the tractor to verify that the speedometer functions correctly and the code does not return.
