3058

Case IH 3058 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Timeout of CAN Message Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit

Issue description

This fault code indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the engine controller has stopped receiving expected data messages from the Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit (often integrated into the Vehicle Control Module) within the programmed time limit.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum 235 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Magnum 260 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Magnum 290 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Magnum 315 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Magnum 340 (Series 4)

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the battery voltage to the ECM is within specification. Low or high voltage can disrupt CAN communication (check if codes 3051 or 3052 are also present).

  2. Look for other CAN timeout codes (such as 3057: Timeout of CAN Message High Resolution Wheel Speed) which would indicate a broader CAN bus failure rather than an isolated module issue.

  3. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus with two intact terminating resistors should read approximately 60 ohms.

  4. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to see if the Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit is online and responding. If it is offline, the issue is likely wiring or a dead module.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Locate Components

Locate the Engine ECM (typically mounted on the side of the engine block) and the Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit / Vehicle Control Module (VCM).

  3. Inspect the Harness

Visually trace the CAN bus wiring harness between the ECM and the VCM. Look for pinch points, chafing against the chassis, or rodent damage.

  4. Check Connectors

Disconnect the harness connectors at both the ECM and the VCM. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins.

  5. Continuity and Short Testing

Test for continuity on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the ECM connector to the VCM connector. Test both wires for a short-to-ground and a short-to-power.

  6. Repair Wiring

If a break or short is found, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splice connectors and heat shrink, or replace the damaged connector pins.

  7. Clean and Reassemble

Clean the connector terminals with electrical contact cleaner, apply a small amount of dielectric grease, and securely reconnect the modules.

  8. Test

Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, clear the inactive fault codes, and cycle the key. Test drive the tractor to verify that code 3058 does not return.

  9. Module Update/Replacement

If the wiring is 100% intact and the code persists, the Vehicle Dynamics Control Unit may have failed internally or requires a software re-flash by a certified dealer.
