3059

Case IH 3059 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: ECM After run was Interrupted

Issue description

This condition occurs when the main power relay for the engine controller fails to open or close properly, or if the machine's battery power was disconnected (e.g., via a master disconnect switch) before the ECM could complete its normal shutdown 'after-run' sequence, causing Terminal 30 to become stuck or interrupted.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 260
  • Magnum 290
  • Magnum 315
  • Magnum 340 (Series 4)
  • 580 Super N Backhoe Loaders
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Verify operator habits: Check if the battery disconnect switch was turned off immediately after shutting down the engine, cutting power before the ECM after-run cycle completed.

  2. Inspect the Engine ECM Main Power Relay and its socket for corrosion, melted plastic, or loose terminal pins.

  3. Test Terminal 30 at the relay socket with a multimeter to verify it has constant battery voltage.

  4. Test relay function: Check for continuity between Terminal 30 and Terminal 87 on the relay. Continuity when the coil is not energized indicates the relay is stuck closed.

  5. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the battery to the ECU for external shorts to ground or shorts to the battery.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn the key switch to the OFF position and wait at least 60 seconds to allow the ECM to attempt a normal shutdown.

  2. Disconnect Battery

Disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  3. Access the Relay Panel

Locate the main electrical distribution box or relay panel (location varies by model, often on the firewall or near the battery box).

  4. Remove the Faulty Relay

Pull the Engine Controller Main Relay from its socket.

  5. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit in the wiring between the relay and the ECM, repair the damaged section of the harness.

  6. Install New Relay

Plug the replacement main power relay into the socket, ensuring it seats firmly.

  7. Reconnect and Clear

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON, connect your diagnostic service tool (EST), and clear the inactive 3059 fault code.

  8. Test Run

Start the engine, let it run for a few minutes, and shut it down normally. Wait to ensure the ECM completes its after-run cycle without throwing the code again.
