3060

Case IH 3060 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC / ENG: Cylinder 1 - unclassifiable error in injector

Issue description

The control module has detected a malfunction with the fuel injector on Cylinder 1, but the electrical signature of the failure does not fit the standard parameters for a direct short-to-battery or a short-to-ground. It typically points to an internal mechanical failure of the injector, a failing solenoid, or an erratic electrical connection.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum Series (180, 190, 200, 210, 225, 235, 240, 340)
  • Puma Series (125, 140, 150, 165, 185, 200, 225, 240 CVX/CVT)
  • Maxxum Series (110, 115, 125, 130, 140, 150)
  • Steiger / STX Series (350 to 600 horsepower models)
  • Patriot Sprayers
  • WD-series Windrowers

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 1 fuel injector for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Measure the resistance of the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid using a multimeter and compare it to the other functioning cylinders to check for an internal open or out-of-spec coil.

  3. Check the continuity of the injector cables to ensure there are no intermittent breaks in the line.

  4. Swap the Cylinder 1 injector with another cylinder (e.g., Cylinder 2). Clear the codes and run the engine. If the fault code changes to the corresponding cylinder, the injector is faulty. If code 3060 returns, the issue is in the wiring harness or the Engine ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery and depressurize fuel system

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts and depressurize the fuel system.

  2. Access fuel rail and injectors

Remove the engine covers or valve cover (depending on the specific engine model, such as the FPT 4.5L or 6.7L) to access the fuel rail and injectors.

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the Cylinder 1 fuel injector.

  4. Remove high-pressure fuel line

Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the Cylinder 1 injector. Cap the rail fitting to prevent contamination.

  5. Remove hold-down clamp

Remove the injector hold-down clamp or retaining bolt.

  6. Extract faulty injector

Carefully extract the faulty injector from the cylinder head.

  7. Clean injector bore

Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no debris falls into the cylinder.

  8. Install new fuel injector

Install the new fuel injector, ensuring all new O-rings and copper sealing washers are in place.

  9. Reinstall hold-down clamp

Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification for your engine model.

  10. Reconnect fuel line and electrical connector

Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec, then plug in the electrical connector.

  11. Reconnect battery and bleed fuel system

Reconnect the battery and bleed the fuel system if required by the specific engine manual.

  12. Clear codes and test

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3060 fault code, then start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation. (Note: Some systems may require the new injector's trim code to be programmed into the ECU).
