3061

Case IH 3061 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Cylinder 1 - Injector Cable Short circuit (Low Side to Battery)

Issue description

The control module has detected that the low-voltage circuit (ground/control side) of the wiring harness for the Cylinder 1 fuel injector is shorted to battery voltage. This prevents the module from properly pulsing the injector, leading to a misfire or a dead cylinder.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Steiger (350 to 600 horsepower)
  • Case IH Magnum (235 - 340, Series 4)
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the Cylinder 1 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could expose the low-side wire to a 12V/24V power source.

  2. Harness Continuity/Voltage Test: Disconnect the injector harness from the Cylinder 1 injector and the Engine ECU. Using a multimeter, test the low-side pin on the harness for continuity to battery positive. If voltage or continuity to the battery is present, the harness is shorted.

  3. Injector Solenoid Test: If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine, the short may be internal to the injector's solenoid power stage. Test the internal resistance of the Cylinder 1 injector to see if it is shorted out.

  4. Connector Check: Inspect the injector harness plug (and valve cover pass-through connectors, if applicable) for oil intrusion, corrosion, or damaged pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Harness

Remove any engine covers or panels necessary to access the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 1 fuel injector.

  3. Repair/Replace Wiring

If the diagnostic tests proved the harness is shorted, locate the damaged section of the wire. Either repair the wire using proper weather-sealed splices or replace the entire injector wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Injector (If internally shorted)

Remove the valve cover (if the engine utilizes under-cover injectors). Remove the rocker arms and fuel inlet tube as required by the specific FPT engine manual. Extract the faulty Cylinder 1 injector. Crucial Step: Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed from the injector bore. Fit the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and a lubricated rubber O-ring. Install the new injector and torque all hold-downs and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly & Calibration

Reconnect the injector harness and ECU. Reconnect the batteries. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool and run the engine to verify the misfire and code 3061 are resolved.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Fuel Injector (Cylinder 1)

Bosch OEM Remanufactured or Case IH Genuine Part. Must be replaced if the solenoid is internally shorted.

  • Injector Wiring Harness / Engine Electrical Harness

Case IH Genuine Part. Required if the short is deep within the main loom.

  • Injector Harness Plug / Pigtail

Generic replacement (e.g., Denso/Bosch style EV1 plug) if only the connector is melted or damaged.

  • Valve Cover Gasket & Injector Sealing Washers (Copper)

Required if the injector is replaced.
