3063 (DTC 6226) - ECU

Case IH 3063 (DTC 6226) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Short circuit error of injector in cylinder 1

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical short circuit on the wiring harness or the internal solenoid of the fuel injector for cylinder 1. The short can be classified as either "High Side to Ground" or "Low Side to Battery".

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma series (125-240)
  • Magnum series (180-340)
  • Maxxum series
  • 240 Series Combines
  • 5130
  • 6160
  • 7160
  • Patriot Sprayers (2240, 3230, 3330)
  • WD series (WD1504, WD2504)

Check the cause

  1. Check for Bank Codes: Determine if fault code 3210 (DTC 7116) - 'Injection bank 1 short circuit failure' is also present, as a short in cylinder 1 can shut down the entire injector bank.

  2. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wire harness leading to the cylinder 1 injector for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the harness might be shorting to the engine block (ground) or another power source.

  3. Isolate the Injector vs. Harness: Disconnect the electrical connector at the cylinder 1 injector. Turn the key on and check if the code changes from a 'short circuit' to an 'open circuit' code (e.g., 3061). If it changes to an open circuit, the short is internal to the injector solenoid. If the short circuit code remains, the wiring harness is shorted.

  4. Ohm Test: Measure the resistance of the cylinder 1 injector solenoid with a multimeter and compare it to OEM specifications to confirm an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Address the Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks indicated a harness issue, repair the damaged section of the wire harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the injector harness entirely.

  3. Replace the Injector (If Applicable)

If the short is internal to the injector: Clean the area around the cylinder 1 injector to prevent debris from entering the engine. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the cylinder 1 injector. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt and carefully extract the injector. Install the new injector with new copper sealing washers and O-rings. Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications. Reattach the high-pressure fuel line and electrical connector.

  4. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 3063 (DTC 6226) fault code, and start the engine.

  5. Verify

Run the engine to ensure no fuel leaks are present and verify that the fault code does not return.
