Case IH 3064 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Cylinder 5 - unclassifiable error in injector
Issue description
The engine control module has detected an electrical anomaly or an implausible signal on the circuit for the fuel injector located in Cylinder 5.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Case IH Magnum Tractors: 180 through 380 (e.g., 235, 250, 340 Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Tractors: 350 through 600
- Case IH Puma Tractors: 125 through 240 (e.g., 165, 210, 225 CVX)
- Case IH Combines: 5130-9230 series (e.g., 7230, 8230)
- Case IH Sprayers: Patriot and Titan series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 5 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause an intermittent short.
Disconnect the Cylinder 5 injector connector and the ECU harness connector. Inspect for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or oil/water intrusion.
Measure the resistance across the injector solenoid terminals and compare the reading to a known good injector (e.g., Cylinder 4 or 6). An open circuit or dead short indicates a failed injector solenoid.
Check for companion codes (such as 3065, 3066, or 3067) which can help narrow down if the issue is specifically a high-side or low-side short.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical arcing or ECU damage. Clean the area around the valve cover and injector ports thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
Remove High-Pressure Lines
Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line running from the common rail to the Cylinder 5 injector. Note: Always cap the rail and the injector fittings immediately to prevent contamination.
Disconnect Electronics
Unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 5 injector.
Extract the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bracket bolt. Carefully pull the injector from the cylinder head. If it is stuck, an OEM injector puller tool may be required.
Clean the Bore
Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed from the bottom of the injector bore. Clean the bore using a specialized bore brush.
Install the New Injector
Fit the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings. Seat it into the bore.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (torque to spec) and the electrical connector.
ECU Programming (IMA)
Use a diagnostic scan tool to enter the new IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) code printed on the top of the injector into the Engine ECU so it can adjust fueling properly for Cylinder 5.
Test
Reconnect the battery, prime the fuel system, clear the 3064 fault code, and run the engine to check for leaks and verify the misfire/code is resolved.
