3080

Case IH 3080 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Cylinder 4 - Unclassifiable Error in Injector

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormal electrical condition or malfunction in the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 4. It is termed "unclassifiable" because the electrical signature does not match standard, specific fault conditions (such as a direct short to the battery or a short to ground, which trigger separate codes like 3081 or 3083). This typically points to an internal failure of the injector solenoid, an intermittent wiring issue, or a failing injector driver within the ECU.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum Tractors 235, 260, 290, 315, 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Tractors 350 to 600 horsepower models
  • Case IH Wheel Loaders 721F, 821F, 921F

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 4 injector for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins

  2. Check the injection signals using a diagnostic tool or oscilloscope to verify if the ECU is sending the correct pulse to the injector

  3. Measure the resistance of the Cylinder 4 injector solenoid and compare it against the OEM specification for your specific engine model

  4. Swap the Cylinder 4 injector with another cylinder (e.g., Cylinder 3). If the fault code moves to the new cylinder, the injector is the culprit. If the code remains on Cylinder 4, the issue is in the wiring harness or the ECU

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Injectors

Remove the valve cover or engine covers as necessary to access the fuel injectors.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or a faulty connector on the Cylinder 4 circuit, repair or replace the injector wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Injector

If the wiring is intact and the injector failed the diagnostic tests, remove the Cylinder 4 fuel injector. Clean the injector bore, install a new injector with new O-rings and copper sealing washers, and torque the hold-down clamp to OEM specifications.

  5. ECU Replacement

If both the wiring and the injector are confirmed good, the service manual indicates the Engine ECU may have a burnt-out injector driver and must be replaced.

  6. Reassembly and Calibration

Reassemble all components. Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH diagnostic tool (like EST) to clear the fault codes and, if required by the specific engine model, program the new injector's trim code (IQA code) into the ECU.

  7. Test Run

Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and the engine runs smoothly.
