Case IH 3081 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Cylinder 4 - injector cable short circuit (low side to battery)

The engine's control system has detected an electrical short circuit to a battery power source on the low-voltage (ground/return) side of the wiring circuit dedicated to the fuel injector for cylinder number 4.

   Disconnect the battery and visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the cylinder 4 fuel injector for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points contacting a bare power wire or battery source.

   Disconnect the harness at the cylinder 4 injector and at the ECM, then use a multimeter to test the low-side wire of the cylinder 4 injector circuit for continuity to battery positive (if continuity exists, the harness is shorted).

   Test the internal resistance of the cylinder 4 fuel injector solenoid, as an internal failure can bridge the circuit and mimic a harness short.

   Inspect the ECM and injector connectors for moisture, oil intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins that could bridge the connections.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Injectors

   Depending on the specific engine model (e.g., FPT common rail engines), you may need to remove the valve cover and rocker arms to access the injector harness and fuel injectors.

   Isolate the Fault

   Disconnect the injector wiring harness from the cylinder 4 injector.

   Repair/Replace Wiring

   If the diagnostic tests proved the wiring harness is shorted, either repair the damaged section of the wire using proper weather-sealed butt splices and heat shrink, or replace the entire engine injector wiring harness.

   Replace Injector

   If the harness tests good but the injector itself is internally shorted, remove the fuel inlet tube and extract the faulty cylinder 4 injector. Install the new injector with new seals/washers and torque all hold-downs and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the injector harness. Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket (if removed).

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the 3081 fault code. Run the engine to verify the misfire/code does not return.
