Case IH 3087 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Switching to replacement value in case of sensor fault (boost or atmospheric)
Issue description
The engine control system has detected an implausible reading, a missing signal, or a hardware failure from either the Boost Pressure Sensor or the Atmospheric (Ambient) Pressure Sensor. The system automatically switches to a pre-programmed replacement value, which protects the engine and turbocharger but typically results in reduced engine power, limited torque, and potentially increased exhaust smoke.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes to isolate the fault (Boost codes: 3019, 3021, 3022; Atmospheric codes: 3023, 3024, 3025).
Perform a Key-On, Engine-Off (KOEO) test using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to compare live data for both sensors (both should read approx. 14.7 psi / 1 bar at sea level). The sensor that deviates significantly is faulty.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Boost Pressure Sensor (located on the intake manifold/piping) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corroded pins.
Determine if the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor is soldered internally to the ECU circuit board, as a confirmed dead internal sensor indicates an ECU failure.
Repair steps
Turn off machine and disconnect battery
If the Boost Pressure Sensor is faulty: Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate Boost Pressure Sensor
Locate the Boost Pressure Sensor on the intake manifold or charge-air piping (downstream of the turbocharger and intercooler).
Disconnect electrical harness
Depress the locking tab and carefully disconnect the electrical harness.
Remove faulty sensor
Unbolt or unthread the faulty sensor from the manifold.
Clean mounting port
Clean the mounting port to ensure no soot or debris falls into the intake.
Install new Boost Pressure Sensor
Install the new Boost Pressure Sensor (ensure the O-ring is seated properly) and tighten to OEM torque specs.
Reconnect harness and battery
Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.
Clear fault code and test-run
Use the CNH EST diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3087 fault code and test-run the machine under load to verify the repair.
Replace external Atmospheric Pressure Sensor
If the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor is faulty and your specific engine model utilizes an external ambient pressure sensor, follow the same replacement steps as above.
Repair or replace ECM for internal sensor failure
If the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor is faulty and the sensor is internal to the Engine Control Module (ECM), the ECM will either need to be sent to a specialized module repair facility to have the micro-sensor re-soldered, or the entire ECM must be replaced and reprogrammed by a Case IH dealer.
