Case IH 3088 (DTC 4512) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM) / ECU A-095: Crankshaft speed sensor values are not plausible.

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving an erratic, invalid, or out-of-range signal from the crankshaft speed sensor. This can lead to poor fuel economy, rough running, hesitation, or engine power loss.

Check the cause

  1. Check for concurrent faults: Verify if other fault codes are active, specifically code 3177 (DTC F1A2) - 'Engine over speed condition detected'. If active, diagnose the overspeed condition first.

  2. Evaluate operating conditions: Verify that the fault was not triggered by a downhill travel condition or another extreme operating scenario that could have caused a temporary engine overspeed.

  3. Check power supply: Ensure that the tractor's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger). Disconnect if present and test for normal operation.

  4. Inspect harness and connectors: Visually inspect wiring leading to the crankshaft speed sensor for damage, bent/dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires. Flex the harnesses while the machine is running to check for intermittent connections.

  5. Perform software check: Verify that ECU A-095 has the most up-to-date software and re-flash it if necessary.

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

    Locate the crankshaft speed sensor, which typically mounts on the side of the engine block near the flywheel.

  2. Disconnect wiring

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  3. Remove old sensor

    Remove the mounting bolt(s) and pull the old sensor out of the engine block.

  4. Clean mounting surface

    Thoroughly clean the mounting surface on the engine block to ensure the new sensor sits flush.

  5. Install new sensor

    Install the new crankshaft speed sensor. Ensure the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth is within the engine's specific tolerance (usually around 0.5mm to 2.0mm depending on the exact engine model).

  6. Secure and reconnect

    Secure the mounting bolt(s) and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes from the ECU and test-run the machine to verify that the engine operates smoothly and the code does not return.
