Case IH 3088 (F-637-09) – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM / EDC) / A-095 Electronic Control Unit: Crankshaft speed sensor values are not plausible
Issue description
The engine controller continuously evaluates the signals received from both the camshaft and crankshaft speed sensors to determine engine angle, speed, and injection timing. If the controller tests the camshaft speed sensor signal and determines it is plausible, but a crankshaft speed signal is not detected for at least two camshaft revolutions (or the pulse sequence is incorrect/interrupted), it triggers this fault code.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Steiger
- Farmall
- JX Series
- 240 Series Combines
- Case 580 Super N backhoes
- various loaders
Check the cause
Check if the tractor's battery power supply has recently been connected to an external power supply (e.g., a jump box or external charger). Disconnect and test for normal operation if applicable.
Inspect the wiring harness and the 3-pin connector leading to the crankshaft speed sensor for breaks, loose connections, or short circuits to the battery negative terminal.
Verify that the sensor is securely mounted and correctly installed. A loose sensor will fail to read the magnetic pulses from the flywheel or timing gear.
Use a diagnostic service tool (like the Case IH Electronic Service Tool - EST) to evaluate the raw signals coming from the crankshaft sensor while cranking the engine.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety and prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the crankshaft speed sensor, which is positioned directly near the engine flywheel casing or the primary timing gear housing.
Remove the Old Sensor
Unplug the 3-pin sealed electrical connector. Remove the mounting bolt(s) securing the sensor bracket to the casing and pull the sensor out.
Clean the Port
Wipe away any deep field soil, oil, or metallic debris from the mounting slot to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flush.
Install the New Sensor
Insert the replacement crankshaft speed sensor into the port. Secure the molded bracket with the mounting bolt(s) and reconnect the 3-pin electrical plug.
Clear Codes and Reset
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port. Clear the inactive 3088 fault code. If the tractor was placed into limp mode, perform the necessary ECU resets via the service tool to restore self-learning parameters and resume normal operation.
