Case IH 3088 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Crank Speed Sensor High Voltage / Crankshaft Sensor - No Signal / Crankshaft Sensor Lost Synchronization

Issue description

The control module is receiving an invalid, missing, or excessively high voltage signal from the crankshaft speed sensor (magnetic pickup). Without this signal, the computer cannot determine the rotational speed and position of the crankshaft, which is critical for fuel injection timing. This will typically result in a crank-no-start condition or force the engine into a backup mode.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness between the crankshaft speed sensor and the Engine ECU for a short to power, short to ground, or an open circuit.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Verify that the sensor is installed correctly, checking for a loose sensor, debris on the magnetic pickup, and ensuring the gap is within factory specification (0.5mm - 2.0mm).

  4. If available, use a diagnostic service tool (EST) to evaluate the raw signals from the crankshaft sensor while cranking the engine to see if any RPM is being registered.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the crankshaft speed sensor on the engine block.

    It is typically mounted on the side of the engine block near the flywheel housing.

  3. Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Using a multimeter, verify continuity in the wiring harness back to the ECU and ensure there is no voltage on the signal wire when disconnected.

    Voltage on the signal wire when disconnected would indicate a short to power.

  5. If the wiring tests good, remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and pull the sensor out of the block.

  6. Clean the mounting surface on the engine block to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat.

    This prevents air gap issues.

  7. Insert the new crankshaft speed sensor and tighten the mounting bolt to OEM torque specs.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  9. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3088 fault code.

    Crank the engine to verify the repair; the engine should start and the code should not return.
