Case IH 3090 – Engine ECU (ECM): Camshaft Sensor - No Signal / Camshaft Sensor Has Lost Phase / Camshaft Speed Sensor Out Of Range
Issue description
The engine control module is not receiving a valid phase or speed signal from the camshaft position sensor, which is critical for fuel injection timing and engine synchronization. When this occurs, the engine may lose power or be forced into a backup operating mode.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Farmall
- skid steer
- Magnum Tractors
- Steiger Tractors
- Puma Tractors
- Farmall Tractors
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- Backhoe Loaders
Check the cause
Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the camshaft phase sensor's raw signals to confirm if the signal is completely dead or just intermittent
Check the wiring harness connecting the camshaft sensor to the ECM for open circuits, shorts to ground, or chafed wires
Verify that the sensor is seated correctly, as an incorrectly installed sensor can cause an offset between the camshaft and crankshaft readings
Repair steps
Inspect/Replace the Wiring Harness
Carefully trace the wiring from the camshaft sensor to the Engine ECU. Repair any damaged sections. Note: For certain models like the Magnum 315, Case IH released an updated version of the engine wiring harness specifically to resolve recurring 3090 and 3091 camshaft sensor faults. Check with a dealer to see if your machine requires the updated harness.
Remove the Camshaft Sensor
If the wiring is intact, locate the camshaft sensor on the engine block/timing cover and remove it.
Install the New Sensor
Replace the defective camshaft sensor. Ensure the mounting surface is clean so the sensor sits at the correct depth, preventing phase synchronization failures.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 3090 fault code from the Engine ECU. Run the engine to ensure the code does not return and that the engine is no longer operating in "Backup Mode".
